Stay Weird
I always had many obsessions and Furbies are still one of them. I lost count on how many hours I’ve spent on Pinterest seeing funny Furbies pics. I even brought this topic this week on therapy and I can only imagine my therapist listening to me complaining about the pressure on my work and then changing the topic to talk nonstop about Furbies because I’ve spent 4h writing about them until 2AM the day before, LOL.
In the end I came to a conclusion that a Furby is a counterpoint to my own perfectionism, as it is an uncanny creature with so much personality. You know, it seems to be that nothing at all popular person at school that had to polish their own personality to be likable, like, myself. This conclusion came in the end of the therapy session, when my therapist decided to do what it seems to be a Lacanian cut.
So it seems that I instinctively look for the imperfect because it soothes my soul, reminding me that I don’t need to be perfect, I don’t need to please anyone, I don’t need to give, give, and give until I have nothing to give to myself.
I’m also listening to Macro Blank again. I remember when the algorithm recommended this artist to me. I was lying on my couch at 1AM, YouTube on the TV, and when the first slowed-down chord hit I fumbled for the remote. That music with the Japanese name… I needed to save it somewhere before the algorithm changed its mind. I know they don’t take credit for the songs. But I still think the skill to pick, mix, and sequence them is valuable.
Looking through this lens, the anti-essentialism of vaporwave and the uncanny beauty of a Furby kinda correlate on the same perfectionist topic. Both are reminders that I should not take myself too seriously. It’s okay to be unpolished.
